Coach Education

The LGF is responsible for promoting all sections of Coach Education as well as provision of JUDGING COURSES for all the different disciplines

Some disciplines have a REGIONAL COACHING ORGANISER who arranges British Gymnastics Coaching Courses as and when required.   The Regional Coaching Co-ordinator (R.C.C.) covers all the disciplines and brings together the information on courses and examinations.

There are five stages of Coach Qualification:

  1. Level 1 (assistant)
  2. Level 2 Coach (C)
  3. Level 3 Club Coach (CC)
  4. Level 4 Senior Club Coach (SCC)
  5. Level 5 High Performance Coach (HPC)

which runs across all disciplines - except that General and Pre-School coaching qualifications do not go beyond SCC.

The highest level is IPC (International Performance Coach) which is accorded to very few and is equivalent to a degree.

BASIC KNOWLEDGE FOR TRAINING AS A COACH

British Gymnastics Coaching Courses are authorised and verified by the National Curriculum Council, and are recognised throughout the world.

All courses contain both theory and practical sessions. The minimum number of hours of each course is laid down nationally.

At the end of each course, there is a minimum number of hours laid down for set tasks to be undertaken under the guidance of a MENTOR COACH, with completion of a LOG BOOK.   It is, therefore, of great importance that anyone considering taking Gymnastic Coach training has involvement as a helper with a BGA registered gym club.

Examinations at Assistant level are only practical with verbal questioning and completed Log Book.

At all other levels, there are practical examinations (with questioning), plus written examinations both for COMMON CORE and SPORTS SPECIFIC, plus completed LOG BOOK.

COACH TRAINING can commence from the age of 14 years old with the Level 1 (Assistant)  Course. The qualification does not come into being until the candidate's 15th birthday.

COACH and higher qualifications, which carry greater responsibility cannot be achieved until the 18th birthday, although the course and exam may be taken up to twelve months before that date.

All levels of qualifications require a current Enhanced CRB check.  It is strongly recommended that ALL people helping out in any way in gyms should have enhanced CRB certification.

Additional courses required by all levels of coaches are -
